The Production received unparalleled access to the archives of Dean\'s estate, which has contributed to a wealth of rarely seen material.  Dean\'s early life on his family\'s Indiana farm is explored in depth in the special, which features rare family photographs as well as interviews with his relatives and childhood friends. 

The actor\'s brief but spectacular film career is also examined, which reveals a wealth of behind-the-scenes material from Dean\'s three feature films. Among the special\'s highlights are Dean\'s rarely seen screen tests, wardrobe tests, and colour home movies from "East of Eden;" black and white wardrobe tests from "Rebel Without a Cause;" and Dean\'s own home movies on the set of his final film, "Giant," as well as the last known photographs of Dean taken while on his fatal road trip.

James Dean\'s  popularity through the decades and around the world remains undiminished. He has influenced everyone from Rock\'n\'Roll performers and actors to  teenagers, students and adults everywhere.

We see James Dean through the eyes of people who knew him: There are interviews with the late Dennis Hopper, Sal Mineo, Rod Steiger, Eli Wallach, Steve Allen, Graham Nash, actors who worked with him on his films and old friends from his hometown in Indiana and Hollywood.
